The Potential of Recombinant Bodies invites dialogue on the changing position of the individual within society. The work uses four 35mm slide projectors and an electric motor-driven rotating disk shutter to animate early twentieth century images of the Tiller Girls performing their ‘precision dance’. In their synchronous and repetitive routine the dancers were compared to the Ford production line, anticipating a body stripped of individuality, race, genealogy and origin, an artificial and composite body fit for the industrial age.
